Editing Nikon Raw Files

Non-photoshop users help pleaassee?

what system do you edit on?
and is it compatible with a nikon camera?
i heard that some things don’t work with RAW files and that jpeg files lose data.
help?
also i want a system that creates layers
or combines pictures.
however you want to say it.
pleaseandthankss

I use the Gimp. It is similar to Photoshop, but free. It is available for Windows, Mac, Ubuntu, etc. It does layers. It does sharpening, blurring, lightening, darkening, and probably everything else you could possibly want. The homepage is here:

I am not entirely sure what you mean by being compatible with your Nikon. If you use the UFRaw plugin you can read RAW files from almost any camera, probably including yours. The full list is here:

JPEGs do lose data. If you aren’t a professional photographer I wouldn’t worry about it too much, though. Just make sure that you are always saving your JPEGs at the highest quality setting and you should be fine.
