DSLR HELP! Trouble with Aperture Priority Mode on a Nikon D40?

i was shooting on a cloudy, overcast day, and every time i switched to aperture priority mode and zoomed in, dialing it down to like f5.6, it would super overexpose the sky. any reason why, and how to fix?

You have to use the exposure (+/-) to get a desired effect and bring it in negative stops to stop your camera from overexposing the picture. There is also the metering. In my camera, i have Center Weight, Evaluative, and Spot metering. You might not see much but they can control the amount of light that enters your camera. Play with your meters to get the amount of light you need.

You can also put the aperture to a higher stop (f8+). You can also buy a polarizing filter which is around $20 to let less light enter and allow you to control the color contrast between the sky and the clouds.
