Nikon Coolpix blinking sign and blank screen. What does it mean?

I have had the Nikon Coolpix S1 for less than a year and recently noticed that the screen has gone completely blank. I can still see the LCD monitor and picture archive. I have reset all my settings but to no avail.

Furthermore, there is a little red blinking box with a hand on the top right corner of the screen. What does this mean???

The blinking hand means you are in a low-light situation with the flash turned off and you are likely to end up with a blurry picture.

If you can view your pictures but can’t use the LCD as a viewfinder, you probably have inadvertently turned it off.
Go to the Setup menu.
Choose “Monitor Settings.”
Choose “Photo Info.”
Choose either “Show Info” or “Hide Info,” but not “Monitor Off.”

This is not really intuitive, but this is how to turn the monitor on.
