Taking HDR photos without exposure bracketing?

My camera doesn’t have exposure bracketing (Nikon D40x). I want to take a stab at HDR photography but not sure how to accomplish the three exposures without the exposure bracketing available-any suggestions are much appreciated!

V2K1 has the right idea, but I would adjust the exposure in manual mode with the shutter only. Changing the aperture will shift your depth of field and could cause your imges to be soft.

The other option is to use your exposure compensation button and do a +1, -1, +2, -2 or whatever variation you decide to do.

A bracketing button or feature only makes bracketing easier, for you, it does not eliminate your ability to do it. You just have to do it yourself.

then, may I also recommend using Dynamic Photo HDR. I find it easy to use, inexpensive and I likethe results I get from it better than Photomatix(which is also good).
