Full frame sensor to be a pro?
I’m 20 years old right now working as a graphic artist and 3d artist. Here recently I’ve been taking a lot of pictures and many people have been willing to purchase my work. I currently own a Nikon D90 with a dx sensor. I’m thinking of up grading my equipment. I’ve honestly considered laying out 5 grand for a pro level Nikon D3s. I really want to make the picture the best possible. But in order to have good prints do i really need a full frame camera sensor to do this?
There are people who will tell you that you must have a full-frame camera to be a pro but, please note that prior to 2007, no professional photographer using a Nikon camera could buy a full-frame Nikon because they did not yet exist. Canon used to be the only game in town for full-frame cameras and yet, there were plenty of professionals using Nikon Cameras. Even today, there are many professionals using DX-format Nikon cameras.
You should do some research on full-frame cameras and thoroughly review what, if any benefit a full-frame camera will add to your photography. There is no question that full-frame cameras do offer cleaner images with less noise. But in terms of overall image quality, your skills come first, followed by the quality of the lenses, followed closely by the camera. So, if you haven’t done so already, you may also want to consider upgrading your lenses because the D90 is, in every respect, an excellent camera that essentially matches or exceeds the pro/semi-pro D300s for image quality at all ISOs.
While i personally have long debated a move to full-frame, I know that doing so won’t make my images any more “professional.” That’s a matter of composition and exposure which won’t change regardless of what camera I use. I’ve seen some amazing photos taken with little more than a pin-hole camera. What that tells me, and should tell you, is that while equipment helps, it is up to the photographer to capture the best images. Make your own choice…Just don’t get suckered into buying a full-frame camera if all you need is a new lens or to simply think outside the box with the gear you’ve already got,
