Could I use off brand Flashes if they are off-camera?
So if I have a canon DSLR and i am running off camera flashes via PC cords, could i use for example a Nikon flash?
Yes, you certainly can. You will have no TTL control, so hopefully the flash in use will have some sort of manual control option, but you can use any flash with any camera this way.
If you are concerned with trigger voltage, you can use inexpensive radio triggers to fire the flashes instead of PC cords, or go optical. I prefer radio myself, many more options than optical.
If you have a Rebel series Canon, you have no PC socket on the camera. You can add one for $20 or less, a popular choice is the Nikon As-15 PC-hotshoe adapter. I used one with a Canon Digital Rebel, no issues. I use a Canon 30D now, but it has a PC socket.
